How to Plan the Perfect Family Photoshoot: A Step-by-Step Guide
Planning a photoshoot is no easy task- especially if you’re coordinating with multiple adults, children, and challenging schedules. Over the years, I’ve photographed many families and worked with all adults, babies, toddlers, and teenagers. That wonderful experience has led me to put together a guide to help you plan your next photoshoot flawlessly, AND there’s a free checklist at the end of the article that you can download and save for reference.
Here we go!
Choose the Right Photographer
What should you be looking for in a photographer? I always recommend you review their photo galleries, specifically for your desired shoot. It’s always easier to go with a photographer with experience at the type of location you want and showcases a variety of families.
As an experienced photographer, two critical things for me would be photos showing eye contact and clarity.
Don’t be afraid to share your vision with your photographer as you discuss your photoshoot and pricing, and ask ALL the questions that come to mind. There’s a good chance you don’t do this kind of thing often, so let’s make the most of it.
Select the Perfect Location
If you have a location in mind, perfect! If not, your photographer can help you with some ideas and options. Here are some things to consider:
Parks
Beaches
Your home/relative home
Gardens
Historical buildings
Lakes
Find the Perfect Time
Coordinate with your loved ones a time that works for everyone, and keep in mind the schedule of any family babies/toddlers. Planning around nap and feeding schedules will contribute to a smoother family photoshoot.
Coordinate Your Outfits
I know you know this one, but it’s always worth repeating. Plus, I figured it’s a great way to give you a few ideas of how you can coordinate your outfits:
By color: everyone can wear the same color tops or bottoms or have accents of that color.
By style: consider the location or the season. Are you taking some photos on the beach or a fall photoshoot in the park? A beach shoot can include fun dresses and shorts, all matching styles. A fall photoshoot in the park can use more autumn tones like oranges, deep reds, and yellows.
Mix and match patterns with solids: If someone wears a pattern, others can choose solid colors from that pattern for their outfits.

Preparing for Your Little Ones
Snacks and toys are always a good idea- they help me bribe the little ones for a bit of eye contact if needed.
Wipes are also helpful if we need a little nose or eye clearing or even if we get dirty while out.
Family Photo Session Props
The location of your shoot can influence props. For the beach example, we can bring beach toys or a towel to lie down on. For a park, a blanket is always nice to pack for some close-sitting photos.
Family prop ideas can include balloons, seasonal items (like pumpkins or ornaments), letter boards, signs, bubbles, etc.
The Little Details
These are things that are important in every photoshoot- they are not make or break, but they certainly help optimize your session:
Have your outfits ironed/ready for the day of the shoot
Don’t forget to consider your shoes, jewelry, and other accessories
Nails: even if you’re not preparing for an engagement shoot, nice nails are always great
As a photographer with over a decade of experience, please always feel free to ask questions and share your vision with your photographers. It helps ensure that expectations are met and that we create a fun, seamless session for everyone in your family.
